Battered Fish was an Australian Christian modern-rock band from Brisbane, formed around Caleb James in the independent scene that grew around Toupee Records. Its 1994 debut, Lure, was an unusual acoustic rock record: no electric guitars or keyboards, little studio processing, and songs moving between relaxed jazz-inflected rhythms, funk-pop and progressive changes. James's writing could place a declaration that God was not dead beside a bitter account of child abuse or a complaint about morning traffic. By Modern in 1998, the trio had moved into electric alternative rock, with subdued vocals, feedback-heavy British-sounding guitars and a darker melodic frame. Violin and cello appeared within the arrangements, while songs about sadness moved toward worshipful hope.
By the early 2000s, Battered Fish had continued under the name Leo Nine, with James and Matthew Gray appearing in the later group. The three Battered Fish members had also started Toupee Records, linking them with other Brisbane Christian acts. Modern reached the United States through Velvet Blue Music after its Australian issue on Toupee Records, but the band's wider exposure remained limited; reviewers described it as a hidden Australian group whose songs grew stronger as the record progressed. James later worked as a songwriter and producer. He released solo material and taught songwriting and creative music technologies at Griffith University.
