    Bright Eyes is an Omaha, Nebraska band formed in the mid-1990s around songwriter Conor Oberst, whose quavering delivery and exposed writing gave the project its early identity. The 1999 EP Every Day and Every Night established a primarily acoustic sound, with country-tinged guitar, strings, and dense studio collages supporting songs about drug abuse, failed romance, and private despair. By Lifted or The Story Is in the Soil, Keep Your Ear to the Ground, Oberst was directing the same agitation toward spiritual and political subjects, while orchestral passages widened the arrangements beyond bedroom folk. The music remained emotionally unstable but became more deliberate. Digital Ash in a Digital Urn pushed further into electronic rhythm and oblique lyrics, pairing direct hooks with a recurring tension between death-haunted pessimism and guarded hope.

    After Bright Eyes played its last show in Honolulu in November 2011, the band entered a nine-year hiatus while Oberst and his collaborators pursued separate work. Its earlier flexibility also produced the 2004 split EP One Jug of Wine, Two Vessels, recorded with Omaha band Neva Dinova and divided between Oberst and Jake Bellows as songwriters and lead vocalists. In 2020, Oberst, Mike Mogis, and Nate Walcott reunited, signed with Dead Oceans, and released Down in the Weeds, Where the World Once Was. The trio resumed touring during the following two years. Bright Eyes released Five Dice, All Threes in 2024 and continued with tour dates into 2025.
