Chevelle is a hard rock band formed in Grayslake, Illinois, in 1995 by the Loeffler brothers. In its early form, the group worked within the Christian music market while drawing from alternative rock rather than CCM pop. Point #1 paired dirty drums and thick fuzz, captured by Steve Albini, with Pete Loeffler's movement from hushed vocals to strained screams; its songs often turned on short, free-verse lines and a quiet-to-loud structure. The band's characteristic tension was already present: delicate passages could give way to a dense wall of guitar and drums without resolving the lyric's anger. By Wonder What's Next, the production had become larger and the writing more immediately melodic, while the riffs grew heavier and the songs used fewer quiet interruptions. The Christian references remained indirect.
In 2005, Joe Loeffler left Chevelle, ending the original three-brother lineup; Dean Bernardini then took over bass after a touring interval with Geno Lenardo. The move from Squint to Epic had already placed the band in a larger market, and Wonder What's Next was followed by an Ozzfest appearance that connected its Christian-market beginnings to mainstream hard rock. Chevelle continued recording through the 2000s and 2010s. Bernardini left in 2019, but Pete and Sam Loeffler continued as the band's core, using touring bassists rather than restoring the earlier family lineup. They released NIRATIAS in 2021 and Bright as Blasphemy in 2025.
