Creed is an American rock band formed in Tallahassee, Florida, in 1994. Scott Stapp's baritone voice sits at the center of music shaped by grunge, hard rock and occasional near-metal force, with acoustic passages giving the heavier songs contrast. The 1997 debut My Own Prison established the band's central tension: its songs used crosses, God and spiritual struggle while Creed rejected the Christian-rock label. Human Clay retained the heavy modern-rock frame but broadened its melodies and instrumentation, making songs such as "Higher" and "Faceless Man" especially direct in their religious questioning. By Weathered, Creed had become heavier and more varied, using longer structures, additional textures and arena-sized choruses. The lyrics remained focused on guilt, doubt, grace and the search for an answer.
Brian Marshall left Creed in 2000, and the band broke up in 2004 after tensions within the group. Mark Tremonti, Scott Phillips and Marshall went on to form Alter Bridge with singer Myles Kennedy, while Stapp pursued solo work. Creed reunited in 2009 and released Full Circle, then stopped performing together after touring through 2012. In July 2023, the original four members announced another return, beginning with appearances on the Summer of '99 cruise in April 2024 and continuing with a North American tour later that year. Creed remains active, with its official site advertising a 2027 Summer of '99 cruise. Its later history therefore runs through repeated separations rather than a single final breakup.
