Jennifer Knapp is a singer-songwriter from Chanute, Kansas, who began writing songs after becoming a Christian while at Pittsburgh State University and developed her audience through coffeehouse performances and church touring. Before Gotee issued the 1997 debut Kansas, she had made an independent cassette and Wishing Well. The debut presented warm, guitar-led folk rock colored by Celtic touches; her lilting voice carried direct devotional writing, while scattered strings and winds softened the edges. Its opening songs moved from a cappella singing to Cranberries-like folk rock and then to a harder electric attack, with "Undo Me" as the most forceful example. Lay It Down kept the introspective acoustic base but broadened it toward pop and folk. By The Way I Am, darker writing met strings, programming, and denser production.
In 2002, Knapp stepped away from public Christian music and relocated to Australia, beginning a hiatus that lasted most of the decade. She returned in 2010 with Letting Go, a release presented outside the Christian-market identity that had shaped her first three albums; she also publicly disclosed that she was in a relationship with a woman. Her later work included Set Me Free on Righteous Babe Records, alongside a memoir and advocacy through Inside Out Faith. She continued addressing faith, sexuality, and personal change in music and public work, including Love Comes Back Around in 2017.
