John Davis is a Knoxville, Tennessee singer and songwriter whose work is tied to Superdrag, the power-pop band he fronted from its formation in 1992. Superdrag's records placed distorted guitars and catchy melodies beside a more bruised alternative-rock attack; Davis's 2005 solo debut John Davis, released by Rambler, redirected that writing toward explicit Christian themes without abandoning his pop instincts. The album keeps the power-pop drive but also uses layered Beach Boys-style vocals, blues phrasing, and country-gospel arrangements, with pedal steel appearing in its gentler passages. Its characteristic contrast is between familiar rock forms and direct testimony: "Jesus Gonna Build Me a Home" sits alongside songs shaped by Brian Wilson and classic country arrangements. The result sounded like a conversion record made by a songwriter who still heard the whole history of rock behind it.
Superdrag broke up after its final September 2003 show, following Davis's conversion and departure from the band's earlier subject matter. The original Superdrag lineup reunited for shows in 2007, returned to the studio, and released Industry Giants in 2009. Davis later formed The Lees of Memory with guitarist Brandon Fisher and drummer Nick Slack, extending his work into psychedelic and shoegazing rock. In 2024, material first intended for a new Superdrag record became Davis's solo album JINX, recorded with Stewart Pack and Henry Pack. Superdrag also resumed live activity, including Chicago shows in 2024.
