John Michael Talbot is an American Christian singer-songwriter from Oklahoma City who began performing at seventeen with his older brother Terry in Mason Proffit, a country-folk-rock band. After that group ended, he entered the Christian music scene as a solo artist, drawing on Catholic worship, scripture, and monastic writing. His music settled into sparse arrangements led by classical guitar and a carefully enunciated vocal, with a medieval or Renaissance cast. Troubadour For The Lord presents that peaceful, text-centered style in both small acoustic settings and larger orchestral productions. By City of God, the sound included electric guitar, changing tempos, fuller backing, and occasional choir. Monk Rock went further, bringing electric blues and country-rock guitar into songs with chants and Talbot Brothers-style harmonies.
In 1992, Talbot founded the Troubadour for the Lord label after fourteen years with Sparrow Records. He continued recording while leading the Brothers and Sisters of Charity, an integrated monastic community based at Little Portion Hermitage in Arkansas. A monastery fire in April 2008 redirected his work toward itinerant ministry, as he traveled between parishes to help rebuild the community. The hurricane-themed single The Beautiful City connected that ministry to relief work after Katrina, with proceeds assigned to Mercy Corps. Talbot remained active as a Catholic teacher, author, and musician, releasing recordings beyond the period covered by these reviews, including Late Have I Loved You in 2024. In 2025, he said he had no current plans to tour or record again.
