    Lost Dogs is a roots-oriented Christian band formed in California in 1991 as a collaboration among singers and songwriters from the alternative scene; Gene Eugene of Adam Again was one of its four founders. The early records combined folk and country with blues-rooted rock, producing music that could sound rustic, reflective, or deliberately comic within the same project. Little Red Riding Hood (1993) made the blend more cohesive, while Green Room Serenade, Part One (1996) brought the four voices and guitars into a more settled style of rootsy rock. The group still resisted a fixed genre, moving between rowdy performances, meditative songs, covers, and studio outtakes. On Gift Horse (1999), the sound became more stripped down and country-focused, while Terry Taylor supplied all the lyrics, reducing the contrast among the members' separate songwriting voices.

    Gene Eugene died on March 20, 2000, shortly after Gift Horse appeared. The surviving trio continued, and Steve Hindalong became an official member after contributing percussion to Mutt (2004), an acoustic reworking of songs from the members' other bands. Island Dreams (2005) then abandoned the usual vocals and country-rock approach for largely instrumental tropical music. The group returned to its roots-based songwriting on The Lost Cabin and the Mystery Trees in 2006 and later made Old Angel from songs developed during a journey along Route 66. After a long period without a new studio album, the four-member band recorded Trick of the Light, released in 2025.
