Ninety Pound Wuss is a punk band formed in Port Angeles, Washington, in 1994. Its early records placed hardcore speed beneath openly Christian lyrics, with Jeff Suffering delivering the words as a near-continuous scream. The self-titled 1996 debut had the direct force of old-school punk, while Where the Meager Die of Self-Interest made the sound darker, sloppier, and more hostile, turning its criticism toward church hypocrisy, social prejudice, and personal regret. The group also had an unusual sense of subject matter: one song attacks religious claims that disabled people lack faith, while another addresses prejudice against punk-minded Christians. By Short Hand Operation in 1999, the band had kept its abrasive core but added keyboards, samples, guitar effects, post-punk structures, and passages that approached pop without becoming pop-punk.
In 2000, after a difficult tour, Ninety Pound Wuss broke up as its members rejected continued involvement with the Christian music industry. Hierarchy of Snakes appeared the same year as a rough live document assembled after the studio albums, giving the group a final release built from stage violence rather than polished production. Jeff Suffering, John Spalding, and Matt Johnson subsequently formed Raft of Dead Monkeys; Suffering later led Suffering and the Hideous Thieves, while Spalding developed the Loveland project before dying of cancer in 2008. Ninety Pound Wuss reunited in 2023 for shows in Washington and at Furnace Fest in Alabama. The band issued a live recording from the reunion period in 2025 and played its first Seattle show in more than two decades.
