    Over the Rhine is a Cincinnati, Ohio band formed in 1989, taking its name from the city's Over-the-Rhine neighborhood. Its early records paired Karin Bergquist's languid, crystalline vocals with intimate acoustic writing and fuller rock arrangements. Patience captured both sides: restrained studio detail, then a more forceful live sound when Ric Hordinski's guitar moved into feedback. The original quartet's final release, The Darkest Night of the Year, recast Christmas material as sparse, melancholy chamber music rather than seasonal background music. After Hordinski's departure, the group shifted toward keyboard-led arrangements and a quieter ensemble sound; Films for Radio expanded that palette with electronic and orchestral textures, while Ohio brought the writing back toward organic country and narrative songcraft.

    Ric Hordinski left in 1996, and Brian Kelley departed soon after, leaving Bergquist and Linford Detweiler to rebuild Over the Rhine around changing supporting players. The band used Amateur Shortwave Radio as a live-and-rare-tracks bridge, then moved from its early independent work to Back Porch and Virgin for Films for Radio without abandoning its independent methods. In 1999 Bergquist and Detweiler began performing with the Cowboy Junkies. In 2003 they canceled an Ohio tour when their marriage was close to collapse, reconciled, and recorded Drunkard's Prayer at home in 2005, turning the crisis into the subject of its songs. They later issued music through Great Speckled Dog, including The Trumpet Child in 2007, and continued as a working duo through Love & Revelation in 2019 and a 2024 hymn collection.
