Royal Anguish was a Christian extreme-metal band formed in Boca Raton, Florida, around 1990, later based in Ocala. Its first recordings used a rough, bass-heavy thrash approach, with blunt production and songs addressing drugs and abortion. Rest in Pieces showed a sharper, more technically assured version of that style; its pro-life writing remained central, but the band no longer sounded like a garage project. By Shocking the Priest in 1993, the guitars and vocals had moved toward old-school death metal, with growled delivery and lyrics about religious corruption alongside abortion. The four-song release presented a faster, harsher version of the same transition.

In late 2006, vocalist Katy Decker and guitarist Marius Kozlowski left, while Asgrim joined with drummer Tom Klinesmith. The lineup changes followed the release of Tales of Sullen Eyes through Fear Dark Records and preceded the band's end in 2008. Royal Anguish had also recorded The Grand Deception, but no definitive evidence shows that the album received an official release. Afterward, Asgrim became involved with Shadow Society, formed in Florida in 2011.
