The members of Athan Asia describe their music as "agitated folk," perhaps evoking images of Alice In Chains teaming up with Peter, Paul and Mary. This is a bit of an unfair comparison, as Athan Asia have developed their own distinct style and put together a wonderfully diverse debut album.

From the brooding and grungy strains of "Darkest Day," to the folky acoustic rhythms of "The Awakening," and further on to the brighter rock of "Today," the rich variety presented here makes Through A Glass Darkly an ear-catching listen.

Athan Asia's lyrical topics are thoughtful and honest, while exploring such themes as child abuse ("Spice"), complacency and conformity ("What!?"), and romantic love ("Song of Songs"). These lyrics are never preachy, but are rather reflective, revealing, and thought-provoking.

Through A Glass Darkly was recorded in a basement. The production isn't perfect, but it is surprisingly good considering the conditions. The musicianship is excellent, showcasing a great deal of collective talent. Mike Perschon's vocals are generally good, and the band's harmonies are well-executed, but they're a bit outclassed by guest vocalist Nancy Klassen on "Song of Songs."

Notable tracks include "Shadow of Things to Come," "Spice," "Funklein," and that neat little bonus song tacked onto the last track.

This project presents a band with a lot of potential, and could be one to watch out for in coming years. That being the case, this album may become a collector's item in the future; snatch one up while you still can!
