For those who remember their metal as the spandex-wearing, big hair likes of Poison, Warrant and Bon Jovi, steer clear of Belica's Looking for the Light. However, for those who remember their metal as the gutsy, studded leather guitar attack of Helloween, Iron Maiden, and King Diamond, pop this CD in your player and CRANK IT!
This CD by band Belica takes me back to that time, what with the blistering METAL contained in Looking for the Light. The riffs are blistering. The music is HUGE. There's stuff here that harkens back to Helloween's Keeper of the Seven Keys pt. 2 and Iron Maiden's Number of the Beast; (track three has a riff that's curiously close to that of Iron Maiden's "Run For The Hills"...hmmmm).
Moving on to the lyrics, many of the songs on Looking for the Light remind me of the Psalms, crying out to God in praise and petition. The first cut, "Purple Land", is a metaphor about the struggle against atheism. "Credo" is basically the Apostle's Creed. The one that sticks out to me, lyrically, is "Don't Stop The Music", where the second verse reads "Rescue me, my rock / Oh Lord! take my hand / Teach me a new song / Help me stand / Touch my tongue", and the chorus goes "Don't stop the music / Don't stop the feeling / Oh please! Let the life be felt."
Belica's Looking for the Light is a welcome edition to my power metal section of my CD collection. It takes me back to a time where heavy metal wasn't afraid to be loud and powerful, both in the music and in the message. For fans of Barren Cross, older Saint and Jacob's Dream.
