Texan Craig Dillingham's first CD, Almost Yesterday, has miles of dirt roads and broken dreams behind it. Dillingham started out while still in high school, played hundreds of shows and even grabbed that golden ring--a recording contract that turned sour. But this straight ahead country album wears these experiences well.
Dillingham's slower songs are a strength here. They are intimate and honest with a kind of folkiness that brings out the best of Dillingham's earnest vocals. "Thirty Years and a Thousand Miles Away," "Not Exactly What I Had In Mind," and "Somewhere Between my Heart and Guitar Strings" are wonderful examples of his writing skills. Think Jesse Winchester late '70's. Dillingham's faster songs are steeped in beer and barstool lyrics. Almost Yesterday is scattered with very tasty pedal steel work of Steve Hinson, delicious fiddle work of Hank Singer and Joe Spivey, and solid acoustic bass work of Glenn Worf.
The entire album possesses a wonderful homey, old school country feel that gives it a late night living room feel.
