The verdict is in, and Jon Gibson is still ccm's answer to Stevie Wonder! For undeniable proof, look no further than his latest release, Forever Friends. Far from being a white gospel imitation of Wonder, Gibson's soulful pop style has taken on a life of its own over the years.
Lyrically, Forever Friends contains the usual religious phraseology, and Gibson gladly admits as much. For example, on "Can't Live Without Jesus," he sings, "Well, it's the same old story you've heard before/But this time it's going to knock you to the floor/You can't live without Jesus, anymore."
Even though the imagery is familiar, the richness of Gibson's voice conveys a deep sense of sincere and heartfelt adoration thereby breathing freshness on the words. Unquestionably, Forever Friends portrays a musician very much in love with God.
One of the outstanding songs on this thoroughly enjoyable release is "You Gotta Love Somebody." It has the same hook and moving qualities of the Marvin Gaye classic "What's Going On." Bowing to current trends, "Happy to Know Jesus" and "You Are the One" have the obligatory rap solo. "Happy..." also includes a fun duet between Gibson and M.C. Peace. Then, following his urban leanings to their obvious fulfillment, "To My Father's House" has an enthusiastic, background choir.
The modern dance beat isn't hard to find on Forever Friends, but Gibson's music is warmer and fuller when he emulates the 60s Motown sound. Again, "You Gotta Love Somebody" follows in this category, as does "Can't Live Without Jesus," "Found A Home," "On My Way To Heaven," and the title track.
The only downside to Gibson's taste is that with only nine songs it's too short. So, be prepared to push the repeat button on your stereo again and again.
