Jonah is a band hailing from England which got its start as a worship band at St. Thomas Church in Chesterfield. The band felt a need to explore their own musical leanings, and on this, their second EP, they have done that in fine style. Hints of 70's rock, 80's hair metal, and a very modern rock sensibility combine to create 4 tracks of hard rocking music with a raw energy that cannot be denied--a little like DigHayZoose, Reflescent Tide, or the 77s, yet not quite like any of those groups.
The opening track, "Enthroned" gets the set moving in the right direction, with its four minutes of sheer power rock. The second track, "Promised Land" slows things down a little, but without losing any of the intensity which the first track included. "Rising" continues the more laid-back pace. The final listed track, "The Sword" is a good capper--but then, following extended silence, there is a hidden fifth track, which explains the 30+ minute run length.
The lead singer has an excellent voice, although his tone quality was a bit of an acquired taste, and the overall playing is very powerful. The overall mix has a very organic, live feel to it, which helps the band capture that classic rock feeling in their songs.
On the whole, this is an EP which indicates that there could be big things on the way for this group. Here's looking forward to hearing more!
