An instrumental piece of music is interesting in that it can take different listeners on different journeys. You can have ten people listening to the same song or album, at the same time, and they will all get something different out of it. So a review of an instrumental album is purely one person's opinion, and this is mine.
Known outside the Cincinnati area as the percussionist for Monk, Joshua Seurkamp has just released a wonderful disc chock full of moody and atmospheric tunes that will transport you to many strange and wonder-filled places. Within the Cincinnati regions, this man is looked upon as the percussionist to call upon in time of need. Josh is accompanied at various times and on various songs by Mike Georgin, Ric Hordinski, Katie Reider, John Zappa and David Eberhardt. A journey to this garden is one filled with delightful sights and sounds that are in some ways similar to the sound pictures painted by Monk. Yet in many ways they stand apart distinctively on their own. Listening to these tunes makes me jealous of people who can pick up an instrument and make all of these delightful sounds come out of it. There are two live cuts on the album and I am in awe, knowing that there are only two people playing these songs.
