Slow Burn, released on Grrr Records, is the follow-up to Trimmed and Burning, the first Kaiser/Mansfield collaboration. While both recordings are acoustic blues, the similarity pretty much ends there. The first album was mostly Kaiser and Mansfield covering tunes from early blues players that they admired. This time around, Kaiser has written two-thirds of the album, and I found that I enjoyed it much more.
With Kaiser on guitar, Mansfield adding harmonica licks now and again, and both trading vocals, this album has a looser and more personal feel to it. Both artists seem to have a real feeling for blues music, and their voices are well suited to it.
Some of the best cuts are "Cover Me," "God Don't Lie," and a cover of the Mark Heard tune "Threw It Away." Rob Glickman's dobro playing adds color and texture to some of the tracks, especially on an instrumental titled "Blind Willie Glickman."
Thanks to Kaiser and Mansfield, Christian blues gets another fine recording.
