Slipping into the well-packed shelves of CDs from female singer-songwriters, Kendall Payne's debut positions her somewhere between the quirky alt. pop of Sarah Masen and the bluesy rock of Ashley Cleveland. Unfortunately, but perhaps unsurprisingly, it also lacks the maturity that marks both of those artists' work.
The opening track is a fairly good, if predictable pop tune which showcases the stronger side of Payne's lyrical pen. But as the album progresses through "Supermodels" -- a song about the writer's unwillingness to be judged on looks which unfortunately makes its own rash judgements--and onwards, the sparks are lost in a generally lukewarm fireplace.
There are hints of interesting songwriting within this album but it is difficult to say how much potential Payne shows, wrapped as she is in a fairly predictable girl-pop blanket.
