Lisa Kellogg's debut on Brainstorm Records is a bit of a departure for her label. While Brainstorm has mostly dealt in the alternative genre, Kellogg's album is distinctly pop. Kellogg and her husband (who also produced the album and provides the guitar work and keyboard programming, too) wrote or co-wrote all of the songs on the project.
The lyrics cover many different themes. The opening cut focuses on the "Least Of These," asking who will care for them and if we will share our hope in Jesus. "Rising Above" and "Rescue Me" both point to dependence on God. "This Is My Prayer" is a quiet and contemplative song asking God to be there, but also acknowledges:
I may fall or fail to see But your grace is sufficient for me
In "I Proclaim" we hear "I'll proclaim, I'm not ashamed of the Gospel of my Lord and Savior." At first listen this seemed out of place with the rest of the project, as I was ready to write off this whole album as a bunch of ambiguous "you songs" (songs where "you" is supposed to refer to God but it wouldn't have to). But after hearing all the songs a couple times, I saw that there is real content about God in all of them, and these songs as a whole represent a true dedication to God and proclamation of that dedication.
Even though this is a debut, most listeners would be hard pressed to tell that. There's not a bad song on the project. The production quality and vocal quality are both excellent. Comparisons to other female pop Christian musicians are inevitable, because of the large number of people currently doing this type of music. Musically the style is similar to Rebecca St. James' debut, although it lacks some of that project's lyrical energy and originality. There's a clear parallel to the late 80's music of Angie Alan, and the vocal quality and lyrical content is similar to Lisa Bevill. The overall quality and musical impression is quite comparable to Pam Thum, as well as the target audience, and there is no reason to believe Lisa Kellogg won't enjoy similar success.
