This is a review for a cd by the band Lit. Yes- that Lit. The one hit wonder whose previous albums are currently collecting dust on the shelves of used cd stores everywhere. Why, you ask? Because their past releases seemed to do a fabulous job at mimicking other bands' sounds, but when the catchiness faded, there proved to be very little substance. Unfortunately, the old adage proves true once again: some things never change. Lit's new self-titled offering is merely another overproduced parody act of various bands. There are pop-punk songs; there is a rock song; there is a Cure cover; there is even a song that sounds like Elvis Costello; but there is very little original material to be found. In fact, there are so many conflicting styles represented, it is hard to know what Lit really sounds like. Sure, the album is catchy in a mall punk sort of way, but the whole album has a manufactured feel to it, as if the band sat down and said, "Hey, people like this band, let's write a song like them." If you are into mall punk and are okay if substance takes a backseat to catchiness, then you may enjoy this album for the first few listens. Just don't expect anything groundbreaking here.
