In an age where dissonance has become an artform and genre in its own right, Lugsole is the latest group to use this medium, and they do so on their newest release, Problems of Involvement, with a fair degree of success. Following inclusion on myriad compilations and a split 7" with Dear Ephesus, their first solo effort has a wide variety of sounds that make for a well-balanced CD.
Lugsole has forged bravely into one of Christian music's most foreign territories with a sound reminiscent of Sonic Youth and The Pixies. "Through All This" and "Away From Me" best display the raw emotion and attitude that have become trademarks of this genre, and Lugsole effectively overlay this intensity with their message of faith in a world that can sometimes make it hard to believe. For a bit of variation, the fifth track, "This Breaks Me," features a not-too-overpowering electronic edge that keeps the listener guessing what they'll hear next.
While their sound is not quite as refined as the aforementioned big names, Lugsole has put together a good enough effort to qualify them as either pioneers of Christian dissonance or a band on the fringes of popular music. Unfortunately, most CCM listeners won't go here, but if your tastes are wider than the typical Christian music connoisseur, this may appeal to you. Either way, Problems of Involvement is a commendable effort by this trio.
