Newcomers Mary Said have a penchant for taking steady, if unremarkable, post-arena rock 'n' roll and filling it with poetic word pictures, a sort of literary guitar rock. With only six chances to try the mix out on their EP, Detergent, it sometimes works: While the explosive "Applesauce" will probably eventually make sense (I hope), the yearning for spiritual cleansing with "Detergent" is on target.
