Million Time Winner is a Monmouth, New Jersey-based band comprised of brothers Christian and Pete Andrews. Both contribute vocals, drums, percussion, and some guitar work, while Pete does all the bass work on their debut album.
All But Snatched Away has a Toad the Wet Sprocket feel to it, from Christian Andrews' lead vocals, down to the artwork. "Am I the Fool" sounds like a cross between Glen Phillips and Mitch McVicker, while "Carries Me" is a Toad-meets-Burlap to Cashmere-style tune.
This album is what an independent release should be: an unknown artist with strong songwriting skills, talented musicians, and well-crafted instrumental hooks. Unfortunately, they also commit the cardinal sin to me: no lyric sheet! (So, I won't be quoting them here).
Power pop influences are shown throughout - at different intervals Andrews' vocals range from The Waiting to Jars of Clay, to Burlap to Cashmere ("Anything"), to Bush ("Raining in Hopewell", "It Might Have Been Better").
"God Be Near" stands out with its mandolin, and "6 Decembers" is probably my favorite for now.
Much like Huddle's Basement Carnival, this is an album that makes me happy I am a reviewer. Otherwise, I probably would never have received the opportunity to hear this CD. I am happy to report that I will hear it many times from this date forward.
