Mondo (Jason Temple, Nic Lloyd and Nicki Morgan and Nick Dixon) hails from the UK (Bromley, Hammersmith, and Wapping) and this fact is quite apparent in their music. Band-related names that popped in my head when listening to the album were all Brit (and surrounding areas) bands. I'm not saying they're in any way trying to rip off their music; in fact, my previous statement really is a compliment. The music has got good roots; great beats, strong vocals and good use of the instruments (simple, yet giving a remarkable sound, with a bit of an edge).
The vocals, sung by Temple (lead), Dixon and Morgan (both backup) are definitely an instant attraction. Temple's got the typical "Brit-rock star" sounding voice (I'd compare it most to either Damon Albarn [Blur] or Tim Wheeler [Ash]) while the backup creates beautiful harmonies. The accents are noticeable, which, to me, is always nice to hear.
Stand out tracks (in my opinion) are "Diamonds;" a slow and simple, yet very beautiful ballad that gets heavier towards the end, giving it a full, altogether pleasing sound; "Boy Without A Name;" another slow song; title track, "This Is This;" again, more toned down in parts, yet with just enough edge added in others; and "Odes" - probably my overall favorite. Each track has something to offer, and though the lyrics/messages aren't always the cheeriest (which I usually tend to look for in a band), they're still enjoyable to listen to.
All in all, I'd say Mondo could really head somewhere big - they've got a good grasp on music; they clearly know the essentials of good music, and they go out and create it.
