I had high expectations for Engage, the anticipated follow up to PAX 217's self-titled debut, but I must admit that I was left disappointed. The album sounded promising at first. The lead track, "Tonight," reminded me of what I call "the PAX sound." It is upbeat, full of energy, and made me want to move. As that song came to an end, I was anxiously awaiting to see what else this disc had to offer. Unfortunately, there were only a few more songs on the record that reminded me of why I fell in love with this band. It sounds like they tried to do too much with these songs, and they get muddled and musically convoluted in their ambition. The record ends on a high note, however. "Countin' Down the Days" is a beautiful ballad that shows another side of PAX. And lyrically, the band continues to grow, with thought provoking words and ideas.
