Penelope is a power pop 4-piece from New Jersey and this is their first recording. Listening to the 3 songs, I'm really reminded of a heavier Plankeye, or a Weezer without the geeky vocals. You all know what I'm talking about. Heavy, fuzzy guitars that belt out one melodic hook after another, bridges that slam right into catchy choruses, and all that.
The songs are short and to the point, with just the right amount of moodiness. Maybe there isn't a lot of variety between the 3 songs, but with just 3 songs, the formula works. If and when the band records a full-length, a little variety and experimentation probably wouldn't hurt.
The band has been around for a year or so, and it shows because the music is definitely tight and polished. The recording sounds good, though the vocals are buried a little low in the mix for my taste. Overall, this might just turn the heads of an indie pop label or two (or at least help Penelope get some good bookings).
