For those of you not familiar with Ran Away to Sea, they are an up-and-coming indie band from Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The band is led by frontman Daniel French who released his own solo album, Viewfinder, a few years ago, a track from which was featured on the True Tunes compilation album, We the Living Vol. 1. This album is a big improvement from their self-titled debut and a step in the right direction. The addition of Heather Hatt on keyboards and backing vocals has brought a great deal of depth to the band.
Musically, Ran Away to Sea is reminiscent of Starflyer 59 with an emo edge. The song compositions are very strong and while there are no radio singles from the album, there are certainly some great rockers and some very listenable jams. This album is worth a listen for any fans of edgy indie alternative rock.
Lyrically, French's world is full of non-heroes, people struggling to make ends meet, struggling to overcome circumstances and struggling for meaning. There are no naive Romeos in love or dashing superheroes saving the day, yet neither is there a sense of hopelessness. French's lyrics are full of real-life people and situations. His passionate delivery is intense and lends weight to the overall feel of the songs.
I Won't Tell a Soul Except the World is a great example of how the sophomore slump is thankfully not a rule. The opening track is entitled "You'll Be Grateful" which may prove to be a prophetic statement for those of you who take a listen. Other standouts include "Officer," "Breakthrough," and "Glorious."
