Seven tracks in a little over 58 minutes. If you do the math, you will find that each of the tracks averages approximately eight-and-a-half minutes. Think back to other songs you know which go for that long. A few names spring up, but not too many. With a few notable exceptions, most of these are tracks to listen to once or twice, but generally a bit too long for repeated listens. Rivertribe, however, make every minute worth it.
Holding to its theme of a journey, the album drifts along from track to track. Inside is a quote from Joy Davidman (wife of C.S. Lewis), explaining the metaphorical context around the 'journey' of which Rivertribe talk. Song titles such as 'House of Light' and 'Homeland' help the journey theme and inspire the listener to reflect upon the idea.
As for the music, there is nothing to complain about. Didgeridoos, violins, bongos, keyboards, nature sounds and many other instruments are used in a striking combination. In a single song, at a single moment, the bongos may be conjuring up thoughts of African tribal people dancing around a wildfire, whilst soaring over the top is the violin which makes the listener think of a cold seaside wind in Scotland. Add to that Australia's very own didgeridoo, and you start getting a refreshingly innovative mix.
Released last year May, Journey has already found considerable success. With sales well over the 10 000 and distribution now reaching North America, there's a good chance you'll start hearing Rivertribe at wedding receptions, or in elevators, or in movies, or on....
