My first reaction to this CD was, "This is an indie?" Everything about this project speaks of professionalism. The musical production is clean and tight, and the packaging is nothing short of spectacular. This album just may dethrone Over the Rhine's 'Til We Have Faces in the best independent artwork department. This is high praise indeed, but it is not without merit.
Deeble's music may be described as art-folk. The instrumentation throughout is comprised of heavily reverbed acoustic guitar, cello and stand up bass. The choice of instruments lends the album a slightly melancholy, often jazz-based feel. Although the style isn't remarkably similar, Deeble should appeal to fans of Harrod and Funck. Shame on you if you haven't heard of them. But I digress...
Deeble's been at the songwriting and recording game for a while, and it shows. The musicianship and production are quality from start to finish, and so is the lyric writing. Thematically, the album seems to split between political ideas and failed relationships, but woven through all is a strong awareness of humanity's dependence upon God. An example of this can be found in the very first track, "The Kiss":
Is this all there is Love held by our own design? Could true love be this Love held by the kiss of God Love held by the kiss...
Perhaps the most impressive statement one could make about this album is found in a simple notice printed on the disc itself. It says, "Contact Liberation Music and we will make additional copies available at what you can afford." This is an artist of quality, concerned with the art and with the audience, rather than with the dollar. It's nice to know people like this do exist. If that doesn't impress you, maybe the album's duet with Victoria Williams will.
