Now for a review of Stryper's new remixed Yellow and Black Attack. The album is definitely collectable for looks alone. I'm afraid the heavy metallers will not be excited about the remix. It's questionable if the EP needed remixing in the first place. Let's face it, the original production was totally hot! That sound put them deep in the hearts of headbangers everywhere. It was short on ballads and real long on metal. The first notable change on the new mix is the drum tracks. The difference between the drumming on the old mix and the new mix is like the difference between a lion that hasn't eaten for three days out in the wild and a well-fed lion at the zoo. The drumming isn't as ferocious and urgent as it was when there was something for the band to prove. The drumming is good. It shows the virtuosity of Robert on his snares, but we're not hearing enough of his double bass. I think we're hearing an improved Robert Sweet. His runs are more complicated and polished, but not real heavy. The screaming intro into "Loud N' Clear" has an added guitar track in it that sounds like a real loose string being rubbed by a finger. It could be just another weird sound Oz can get with his guitar machine. The original versions of "Loud N' Clear," "From Wrong to Right" and "C'mon Rock" are probably better than these versions, but "You Know What to Do" and "Loving You" show a pleasant improvement. "Loving You" has a real cool "flangerized" guitar sound on the opening chords right after the drum rolls and "Loving You" harmonics. The best surprise on the album, in my opinion, is "You Won't Be Lonely." A finger trill is added to the melodic chords in the beginning and end of the song. They made the song a bit more melodic. The one new song, "My Love I'll Always Show," is a real gentle ballad accompanied by the acoustic guitar. Michael sang this with a track on the last leg of the Soldiers tour. (Probably because there's no drums or bass during the song.) "Reason for the Season" sounds untouched. Another special treat on this album is that the lyrics are printed. Now we can decipher those hard to understand lines like: "We're rockin' for the Rock, and I know we'll never stop/ And we will never be ashamed." This EP and the live video ought to keep us occupied until we all shout "To Hell With the Devil!"
