I will admit I am a very new fan to the rap & hip-hop scene. But Sup (pronounced soup) the Chemist has made me a fan. His debut CD, Dust, offers a wide range of artistic style--and provides the world of hip hop with an outstanding work. Sup is a genius rapper and storyteller--providing an amazing musical experience during each listen. The lyrics are deep and profound, more so than most rappers. Sup the Chemist deals with the struggles of life as a Christian in a fallen world that is soaked with sin. There are a number of surprises on the CD. One of my favorites is a version of Kansas' 'Dust in the Wind' that is found mixed in the background of the song 'As the Sun Rises.'
I think what keeps this album fresh and new in the realm of hip hop is the blend of musical genres sprinkled throughout the CD. You will find samples of big-band, jazz, industrial, R&B choirs, violins, haunting flutes, and distorted guitars over the mid-tempo beats. A number of guest artists make special appearances. My favorite is the rap-core band Project 86 on 'Is This A Dream?'
This is an excellent CD. It brings hip hop to a new level by weaving detailed stories with an excellent blend of music.
