Now everyone is probably wondering why I gave this album a 10 while I gave the new tantrum album a 9 in another review. It's true that Modernmu$ick (2000!) is a much better produced album, and much deeper. But The Heart Is... is an album that totally blew away everything that we thought was christian hardcore. The edginess of this album is held by no one else. This album was released in 1998 and then rereleased on Takehold records after the band was signed. With that knowledge it is not surprising that the recording quality is not the best. But this cd makes up for that plenty. The lyrics are extremely edgy and some even controversial ... but TOTM explains the album in the cd case. The Heart Is... is an album that deals with the sexual frustrations a teen would go thru. It deals with many issues that as a society (and a church) make us feel uncomfortable. When they sing about these issues they get very real and tell it like they feel it. Most of the time this is expressed in a very raw way. This cd will wake you up about corruption in the church and other frustrations. TOTM claims to be birthed out of frustration, and this is very obvious in this cd. But they make one thing obvious, that in all this mess we call life Christ is still alive and the answer to these frustrations. I have much respect for this band, and count the music as one of my favorite cds. The music and the message are forging new grounds in the christian scene. If you're like me, and enjoy experimental music that is extremely edgy ... then you will buy this cd, and any other cd TOTM puts out.
