The Elms are a new offering from Sparrow Records, aimed at alt-pop/college rock crowds, with smart, hum-along tunes. Mixing in elements of bands like Third Eye Blind and Ben Folds Five, they create their own likable pop-rock. La-de-da choruses, harmonies, piano, guitar, an occasional horn section, and tight percussion works together nicely with their vocal and musical abilities. Some of the lyrics could stand to be beefed up a bit, although they show promise in that direction already. "I will gladly mind my manners if you'll hold me in esteem" and "You pour yourself into a bed, it's different than your own," are examples of some of the stronger phrasing.

While not particularly groundbreaking, in terms of innovation, The Elms have a pleasant sound, and a youthful charm. With only five songs to gauge their sound on, it will be interesting to see what more developed efforts will come out of this young band in the future.
