One of the best things about today's new artists is that they are willing to stretch--not to be forced into one type of music. Artists like Beck, Faith No More, or even Prince, who have combined elements of differing styles into their work, have inspired a new breed of performers who pick and choose what they like, rather than being forced into one category.
The Kingpin Wrecking Crew is the latest in that line. Incorporating a mix of rap, R&B, funk, and rock, as well as gospel at times, From the Roots Up is a project that has a lot to offer for fans of all kinds of music.
"My Enemy is Done" is a Fishbone/Red Hot Chili Peppers-style number that speaks of the various ways in which Satan attacks. "Cry" has an ending that seems out of place. "Progressive" shows a man leaving the party lifestyle to replace it with something better.
From the Roots Up is entertaining, challenging, and is a good listen. A pretty good list of things to have in a CD.
