The Metal Monks
When the Son Comes Down
Reviewed by Paul Q-Pek
This 4-song tape is what some would call "art rock" or "dark metal". Most of the vocals by Sean O'Leary are sung an octave below most metal singers. This can work well, as demonstrated by Mike Lee of Barren Cross, but unfortunately it does not come off as well here. The musical ideas on this tape are promising, but it lacks the big professional production that is needed in this genre. The highlight of the tape is the power ballad, "Can't You See That He Loves You". The sincerity of Metal Monks is evident throughout, and potential is something they have a lot of. The Monks have not arrived, but they are on their way. Send $6 to Metal Monks, c/o YWAM Vancouver, PO Box 4670, Vancouver B.C. Canada, A6B 4A1. Make checks to Victor Brassard.
