    Carolyn Arends is a Canadian singer-songwriter from Vancouver, British Columbia, who began writing for other Christian performers before touring and recording under her own name in the mid-1990s. Her 1995 debut, I Can Hear You, placed story songs and intimate observations over acoustic guitar, piano, and folk-pop arrangements colored by mandolin, fiddle, dulcimer, and accordion. The songs treated ordinary moments as signs of spiritual meaning, including a song about noticing birds, church bells, and children’s laughter. Arends changed direction on Feel Free in 1997, adding electric guitars, retro-rock textures, and a full touring band while retaining literary lyrics and personal subjects. This Much I Understand brought the acoustic writing back toward the foreground in 1999, with reflections shaped by motherhood and concern for her son’s future.

    After her period with Reunion Records ended, Arends continued recording independently through her own 2B Records operation. She released Christmas An Irrational Season and Under the Gaze in 2004, moving toward folk arrangements, piano-led passages, and slower performances that left more space around her voice. The Christmas record used mostly original material to examine the implications of the Christmas story rather than presenting a standard carol collection. Arends also expanded her work beyond recording, becoming an author, speaker, teacher, and director of education for Renovare. She remains based in British Columbia and continues to perform and release music, while her later career has included books, teaching, and selected concerts alongside songwriting.
