Glenn Kaiser Band is a Chicago blues-rock trio formed around 1999 by Glenn Kaiser after his long tenure in Resurrection Band. Kaiser brought the older group's hard-rock force into a smaller setting, using gritty electric guitar, slide guitar, harmonica, and gravelly vocals over a spare rhythm section. Winter Sun, the 2000 debut, balanced raw blues with direct Christian lyrics about the Rapture, sorrow, hope, and the cost of workaholism. Carolina Moon pushed harder toward distorted power-chord rock. By Blacktop, the approach remained loud and blues-based, with slower autobiographical songs and recurring themes of hardship, marriage, and redemption.
In 2000, Resurrection Band ended, while Kaiser continued with Roy Montroy and Ed Bialach in the new trio. Montroy, a former Resurrection Band bassist, became a substantial songwriting partner on Carolina Moon and wrote or co-wrote most of the songs on Blacktop. The group's live identity became clearer on Live in 2005, which presented electrified Chicago blues, extended guitar work, and guest appearances by Dave Beegle. Kaiser also maintained his solo blues work and pastoral role as the band continued beyond the period covered by these records. A later Glenn Kaiser Band release, Octane, appeared in 2008, and the trio is still an active performing group.
