    Formed in Little Rock, Arkansas, in 1989, Living Sacrifice began as a fast, tightly arranged thrash band with hardcore-leaning vocals. The three-song No Yielding to Ungodly established its method: abrupt time changes and dense rhythm guitar, with lyrics aimed at false doctrine. On the 1991 debut, slower passages exposed more shape beneath the speed. Nonexistent pushed the vocals into guttural death/grindcore territory, while acoustic openings and endings linked songs into something close to a single suite. The extreme delivery often made D.J.'s words difficult to hear. By Reborn in 1997, the tempo had eased toward groove metal and hardcore, with huge riffs and more intelligible shouting. Acoustic introductions and sampled textures gave the songs a broader structure without removing their physical force.

    D.J., whose full name was Darren Johnson, left during the break after Inhabit, and Bruce Fitzhugh took over lead vocals while Chris Truby moved to bass. Living Sacrifice returned in 1997 through Solid State Records with Reborn, then changed again when Jason and Chris Truby departed before The Hammering Process. Rocky Gray joined on lead guitar, Arthur Green took bass, and Matthew Putman added percussion. The group ended its touring in 2003 after members committed to other projects; Gray later joined Evanescence. Solid State issued In Memoriam in 2005 as a best-of collection with three new songs. On February 4, 2008, Fitzhugh, Lance Garvin, Green, and Gray announced a reunion. They later released The Infinite Order in 2010 and Ghost Thief in 2013.
