    Twothirtyeight was an indie rock band from Pensacola, Florida, formed in 1995 and associated with the Christian alternative scene. Led vocally by Chris Staples, the group began with quiet-loud dynamics, strained high-register singing and distorted guitar melodies rooted in emo, power pop and pop punk. The 1998 debut Missing You Dearly focused on troubled relationships alongside a painful search for God, while its hidden tribute to former bassist Kevin Glass became one of the band's recurring personal markers. Matter Has a Breaking Point retained the guitar-heavy approach but used more acoustic space and slower passages. By Regulate the Chemicals, the songwriting had grown more deliberate, with midtempo pacing, unusual lyrics and instrumental sections that arrived gradually rather than following standard verse-chorus patterns. You Should Be Living moved further toward funk-tinged indie rock with a worn, Americana-influenced tone.

    Kevin Glass died in a car accident in 1997, before the band's first full-length appeared. Owen Grabo later left, and Twothirtyeight recorded Matter Has a Breaking Point as a three-piece with Staples playing bass; Jake Brown subsequently joined on bass for Regulate the Chemicals. The band signed with Tooth & Nail when it acquired Takehold, which led to a 2002 reissue of Regulate the Chemicals with additional songs. Drummer DJ Stone also departed during this period, and You Should Be Living became the final album. Twothirtyeight disbanded in April 2003. Staples then fronted Discover America before pursuing a solo career, while the band briefly reunited for performances in 2012.
