I was at work a few days ago (I am an Assistant Manager at a Turkey Hill Minit Mart) and I was stocking the cooler. I came out of the cooler and a group of guys were standing right near the door and one of them noticed the Boy Sets Fire windbreaker I was wearing and complimented me on my choice of clothing. A few minutes later I was in the parking lot with these guys and it turned out that they are in a band from Pittsburgh, PA called Better Off Dead. They gave me a CD and I told them that I would review it for them.
What they gave me was a 4 song DIY album. For being a 4 track burned cd, it was a really good recording. I have heard really bad DIY releases but this was a rather good recording.
I found the music to be a mix of Planes Mistaken for Stars, Small Brown Bike, and Lifetime. The songs were mixed with political statements, love, and just plain old life. I wish the album was a little bit longer but it is a great first effort for a new band. Check them out at their new website.
