Rarely does a band whose previous CDs have failed to impress me release a CD that amazes me. But in the case of Bleach's self titled third CD, I was blown away by the first listen. After making member changes, losing two people and picking up former Seven Day Jesus guitarist Russ Fox, their latest release is indeed a new beginning. Not only have their lyrics matured, with a deeper and fuller sense of our understanding of who God is and who we are to Him; but also they have developed a more unique and richer sound instrumentally. The album starts off with 'Heartbeat,' a song that immediately demands our attention. The fast pace of the CD continues with a catchy pop sound that reminds me of Weezer with songs like 'Once Again Here We Are' and 'Breathe' intermixed with occasional, reflective songs like 'All That's Sweet.' The album closes off with quieter songs and leaves us with the hauntingly beautiful 'What Will Your Anthem Be.'

I find this album to be an act of worship and not just a listening experience. Bleach seems to really explore the power and the grace of God. Dave Baysinger, their lead singer, said that, "We want to challenge people. We've always been bold with our message. We're here because of Jesus Christ—that's the only reason. If there's anything special about us, it's not really us; it's the gifts God has given us." The music forced me to contemplate the character of God, making me examine my own life and see where God belongs. Tears were even shed during some of the songs. The touching reality of music when it's derived from the power of God leaves the listener a new person. This is definitely the case with Bleach's latest album.
