I don't think we're in Kansas anymore, Toto.
The long time indie band Room Full of Walters is finally breaking out of a midwestern bubble and receiving national acclaim. This Wichita, Kansas band has been around in one form or another for nine years, playing a fun mix of straight up rock n' roll.
The band has an interesting history, starting nine years ago as a mainstream band playing in bars, clubs, and wherever they could. The group broke after their third independent release in 1995. But they weren't done yet. After coming to Christ individually, the band reformed and started writing about their new found faith. They were their own audience, writing songs that spoke to those who didn't know Christ. Their 1997 release, Sleepy-head, received strong reviews, and now they're back with El Grande.
"We all love a good melody, loud guitars and a catchy hook," exclaims guitarist/lead vocalist Jamie Woodson. El Grande features just that. The CD opens with 'All The Way,' which doesn't quite seem to go all the way. It's an okay song, but a let down of an opener. Skip to 'Left Alone,' which boasts a catchy chorus and cool guitar licks (which you can say about most of the album). 'Snowfort' is probably the best song on the album and proof that Room Full of Walters can have some fun, too. 'King For a Day' comes in a close second with its hooking beat, jam session and drop out line at the end of the chorus. '(Walk On By) My Oh My' and 'Witness' are strong showings of their talent at slower material.
Overall, it's a hard rock album for rock n' rollers. The band jokingly dubs themselves "a lot of people's favorite band.' As long as a lot of people are into loud guitars and rock n' roll, the motto fits.
