As promised a couple months ago, Australia's Dumpster has released a new LP, Sky-Fi, on Toupee Records. It begins with their terrific, sugary maxi-single track, Cravin' Mild. Dumpster's songwriting strength was always lifting passionate, catchy choruses out of swirling, buzzing jam verses. And they go with what they know at first on Sky-Fi, honing that aspect of their songwriting to a level they had only hinted at on their Bulletproof debut. They also show more diversity, risk-taking, creativity, and musicianship on this effort. As after the first few familiar tracks, each song sounds distinctly different from the ones preceding and follow it. Sultry, smooth grooves that can faintly recall the Sea And Cake at times, trippy whispering tracks, hard-hitting straight rock songs, Prayer Chain-like mazes of distortion, Aunt Bettys-like bops, and a number of other approaches are employed. Almost all of them succeed wonderfully (there are one or two songs to be skipped), and, despite the (weak) comparisons above, Dumpster really sounds only like Dumpster. Nice.
