I can still remember the days when bands like Joy Electric, Pep Squad, Plankeye, and Value Pac were at the forefront of artists at BEC Recordings--ah those were the days. Fast forward five or so years and what is BEC churning out these days? They are Tooth and Nail's radio friendly sister label boasting mainly modern rock and some hip-hop. The latest crop of artists is mainly what you would hear on any modern rock station across the country with Kutless leading the way. The latest release from the label and friends of Kutless is Falling Up's 'Crashings'.
Falling Up's debut is a mix of rock, hip-hop, metal and r&b all mixed together for what the band calls 'pash rock'? Much like Linkin Park this band is a six piece, which includes the proverbial D.J. and the comparison doesn't stop there.
In tracks like 'New Hope', the rap/rock thing is typical. On other tracks they leave the rap thing behind and attempt to rock. 'Broken Heart' is about the only song on the album where the band makes a failed attempt to create their own unique sound. Lyrically the band does not shy away from their faith, which is reflected throughout the album.
The most laughable track on the album, 'Jackson 5' is a collaboration with members of Kutless and also Ryan Clark of Demon Hunter where they rap, 'Comin at ya like the Jackson 5' which mimics Limp Bizkit more than Linkin Park.
If modern rock cover bands are your thing then I suggest you go pick this album up--you will be thoroughly pleased.
