I know very little about FLS. However they hold the record for one of the most impressive acts I have seen during a live performance. At the Decapolis stage during Cornerstone this summer, the bass player did a standing back flip with his bass. Sick. With all the hardcore bands these days, it's hard to know which is worth your time. But after trimming away the fat, hopefully, you're left with a nice veal cutlet. Vegan or Meateater, you have to agree that "Wormwood" makes a great meal. Standing between the cliffs of metal-core and old school hardcore, FLS has a foot on each. It's the perfect balance of both. Great NYC style vocals, the occasional technical guitar riff that pops up here and there, the cuts, and the breakdowns all make this a great album. Not afraid to write music that distinctly theirs, FLS unveils a host of surprises. Their songs go in all sorts of unpredictable directions. For example, the third song, "What's The Use," at one point features clapping along with a brief jazz interlude. Just when you think that a song is in danger of becoming like everything else out there, another twist takes you back to your knees. There's also a slower hidden track to showcase their sensitive side, so when the album ends just let it keep playing for your dessert. A good recording allows their songs to stand out, as it should. This is a very refreshing listen, well worth the high grade.
