Fred Hammond has created several successful albums as a praise and worship leader. With this latest release, he moves to more of a concert performance, but still several of the songs he is singing are from the praise and worship variety. As might be expected, he brings a decided Black Gospel flavor to the mix as well. He produces and sings lead vocals on all the tracks, accompanied by a small choir.
Some of the songs are covers of old praise and worship songs such as "David's Dance" and "Oh Give Thanks." "No Weapon (Formed Against Us Shall Prosper)" is a familiar verse set to a different tune.
A couple of the new songs are winners, including "Promise Keeper" and "Prodigal Son." On these two, and only these two, the album moves away from the repetition found at the end of most gospel songs and in the totality of the rest of the songs in this album. In these two songs, Hammond demonstrates his ability to sing, write, and arrange in a more lyrical style, and the result is good.
I wish that the blending of praise and worship with a gospel style had created a better synergism, combining their strengths instead of their weaknesses. But this album, which is more subdued than many other praise and worship albums, does provide a useful resource for during quiet ministry time after a praise service, and there is no doubt that many will be blessed by it.
