Hong Kong Six is a six piece indie pop band from Orange County California. The self titled release is a pop delight to my ears. The elements that make a good indie pop record are all here. Singer Darren Geare's vocals are very Rivers Cuomo and are complimented by Alisa Santoro's sweet Kim Deal-sque backing vocals. Weezer, The Pixies, The Rentals and Sonic Youth heavily influenced this band.
The melodies are pleasant and well crafted, the songs are catchy, and the tracks well placed to make this a solid full album. The Orange County sound is apparent throughout this release however it does not come across as bland or typical. Noisy guitars are complimented nicely with rich poppy bass lines and nice keyboard layers. Stand out tracks are "Let's Sufficate", Rainy Day", and "I Hate You Cuz I Love You".
This record is definitely for fans of bands like the those mentioned as well as Phantom Planet, Franz Ferdinand and most of the newer indie pop bands that have captured the hearts of OC fans everywhere.
