I don't know about your area, but anytime a club in town has "retro-night" the place is packed. So the music of the disco era is still alive and well--for better or worse.
From one look at the cover of this album, it should be clear that Hymn Jim's Gospel Gems attempts to capture the essence of the era. If you ever wondered what "Shine, Jesus, Shine" would have sounded like back in the '70's, then wonder no longer.
They have taken several well-known works and recreated them with the disco-era feel, and added a few new compositions to complete the project. Other re-made classics include "People Get Ready," "I Waited for the Lord," "I Will Call Upon the Lord," "Oh Happy Day," "Meet Us Here," "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot," and "There's a River of Life."
The album is mostly down-beat, capturing the slow side of disco. There are even some nice Hendrix-like guitar riffs. It should be an appreciated project by retro fans.
