Australian trio Ignite has released this six-song demo of booming low end reminiscent of Sabbathmeets Danzig. Ignite works from a crunchy power chord base, and several songs showcase a catchiness not often found in the independent metal songscope. "Sanctuary" starts off the tape with low, almost hushed vocals that build to a full, guitar-based chorus. Bassist Derek Garland has a gravelly, harsh set of pipes. For the most part, it works, although a few of the screams seem a little too strategically placed.
Both "Lungbuster" and "Bury The Past" employ a groove that leans toward the heavy pop/rock feel, and this is not a bad thing. On both, Taylor's guitar is prominent, and the Garland drummer, Rie Thomas, rhythm team keeps it together. "Nightmares" has some eerie guitar effects that illustrate the title and subject of the song, although the double-time thrash break seems like overkill. Lyrically, there are also several sparks that, with the right treatment, could mature into strong statements. Sure, recounting the ills of smoking in "Lungbuster" may initially seem a bit silly, but it shows Ignite's desire to touch some other issues. We all agree that the world doesn't need another "God Rules" band. Thankfully, that's one thing Ignite isn't.
